Thesis

a document presenting the author's research and findings submitted in support of candidature for a doctoral degree

All those registered on a doctoral degree at Exeter will be required to submit a thesis as the culmination of their research.

For direct-entry PhD students the thesis is the only piece of formally assessed work you will need to hand in, though you will need to submit pieces of formative work to your supervisor periodically throughout your studies.

A typical thesis comprises the following elements:

  • a title page
  • an abstract
  • a table of contents
  • a body, comprising the various chapters
  • a bibliography/references section

The length of the thesis is determined by which degree programme you are registered on, as follows:-

  • PhD thesis = 100,000 words maximum
  • EdD thesis = 50,000 words maximum
  • DEd Psych thesis = 50,000 words maximum

A thesis is examined by viva voce exam, by a minimum of 2 examiners, at which you will be expected to orally defend your research and findings.
