Summary Academic Profile

Paul Ernest is Emeritus Professor of Mathematics Education at Exeter University, UK, where he has directed the doctoral and masters programmes in mathematics education for over 10 years. He is well known internationally for his research and conference presentations and he has published over 200 papers, chapters and books ranging across the fields of mathematics, education and philosophy. His books include The Philosophy of Mathematics Education, Routledge/Falmer 1991 (Note 1), and Social Constructivism as a Philosophy of Mathematics, SUNY Press, 1998. His main research interests concern fundamental questions about the nature of mathematics and how it relates to education and society. Paul Ernest edits the international book series, Studies in Mathematics Education, with Routledge/Falmer press. He founded and edits the Philosophy of Mathematics Education Journal, located at http://www.people.ex.ac.uk/PErnest. Two recent numbers (20 & 21 in 2007) made up a special issue on social justice and mathematics education.
