Dr Judith Kleine Staarman
Senior Lecturer in Education and Director of Thinking Schools @Exeter

Profile

I am a Senior Lecturer in Education the Graduate School of Education at the University of Exeter, and Director of Thinking Schools @Exeter.

My research focuses on the complex inter-relationship of learning and the social context and on understanding the social, discursive and temporal nature of teaching and learning processes. I am particularly interested the role of dialogue in teaching and learning.

Another one of my interests lies in educational uses of technology, in particular in issues to do with pedagogy and dialogue around technology in education. I have been involved in research on the role of Interactive Whiteboards for teaching and learning, the use of wikis in primary school science and computer supported collaborative learning in primary education.

I am currently involved in a HEFCE funded programme to develop data analytical and coding skills for social sciences and humanities students (Institute of Coding). I am also involved (with Taro Fujita and other colleagues) in a project to test group thinking with iPads.

Other research that I have been involved in includes a government (ESRC) funded research project called 'Dialogic Teaching in science classrooms' (with researchers in Leeds and Cambridge) and an ongoing research programme called 'Thinking Together', aimed at improving children's skills in communicating, learning and reasoning (with researchers in Cambridge and other universities).
