Professor David Hall
Head of the Graduate School of Education

Profile

David Hall is an education researcher with a particular interest in large scale educational reform and its effects upon teachers and the wider workforce in educational institutions. This interest is reflected in research he has undertaken with educational leaders in schools grappling with the contradictory demands of the New Public Management of public services, urban teachers in England facing the dual effects of spiralling socio-economic inequality and high stakes assessment and university lecturers in a transitional economy experiencing major upheavals in the wake of the collapse of the former Soviet Union. His research has been funded by agencies including the Economic and Social Research Council, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, the Department for Children Schools and Families, the Training and Development Agency for Schools and the Department for International Development.

Professor Hall’s teaching has mainly focused upon education policy and leadership and he was responsible for developing a series of MA programmes targeted at both UK and international education professionals. His M level teaching has included over ten years as a PGCE tutor, four of which were as Director of Secondary Initial Teacher Education.  His doctoral students have completed theses on topics including managing change in urban schools, leadership and cultural change in Indonesian universities, leadership in the FE sector, the rise of consultants in English primary schooling and links between social media and popularity amongst secondary school pupils.

Prior to joining the university sector Professor Hall spent twelve years as a teacher of Economics, Politics and Business Studies in a variety of schools, VI Form Colleges and FE colleges both in the UK and overseas. Most of this time was devoted to teaching, but he also assumed a range of additional roles and responsibilities including running a large Department, serving as an Assistant Principal, writing a series of textbooks and participating in a number of curriculum development projects.

Professor Hall is currently Head of the Graduate School of Education at the University of Exeter and was previously the founding Head of the Manchester Institute of Education at the University of Manchester.
