Chris Wakely
Lecturer in Modern Languages Education

Profile

I teach on the secondary and primary PGCE courses, specialising in modern languages, particularly German and French. I also coordinate PGCE interviews on behalf of the College.

After teaching languages for 15 years in UK secondary schools and being head of MFL in two, I spent 20 years as the languages adviser for Devon local authority. In this role I ran CPD for teachers and oversaw the National Languages Strategy in Devon between 2003 and 2010, including the management of the introduction of languages into 326 primary schools. I am an experienced Ofsted inspector, inspecting MFL in both primary and secondary schools. I have been involved in Initial Teacher Education for 20 years, establishing and tutoring two separate SCITT courses before joining the University of Exeter PGCE course part-time in 2012 as principal German tutor.

I have been involved in action research in three main areas, each of which has produced teaching resources published under the name Take10 Languageswww.take10.org.uk

1. Exploring the use of music and movement to enhance language learning in primary schools. This project, 'Ca bouge!' won the prestigious European Award for Languages in 2010. Teaching resources published as a result of the project, Take10 en francais, ..auf Deutsch, ..en espanol, ..en famille are being used in more than 22,000 UK schools, helpin children to learn languages whilst taking part in daily physical activity.

2. Promoting global citizenship, intercultural understanding and French. The resulting publication, Take Mali, won the European Language Award and the Mary Glasgow Prize in 2011.

3. The use of synthetic phonics in French to improve learners' spelling and pronunciation. The resulting multi-media resource, Take10 Phonics en francais, is proving a popular method of helping schools to provide effective transition between Key Stages 2 and 3.
