Overview

Geoff isa Lecturer in Education at the University of Exeter.  In recent years he has been employed on a part time basis teaching Secondary RE PGCE. This year he takes on the additional role of module tutor on the MAEd Understanding Education: Global Perspectives course. He was for over ten years lecturer in religious education at the University of Birmingham. Previous to that Geoff was Director of the RE Centre situated at Westhill College. He is an experienced trainer of RE teachers both in Initial Teacher Education and as a provider of Continuous Professional Development. He is the author of a number of books on religious education as well as being a regular contributor to RE journals, both professional and academic. Since coming to Exeter, Geoff has been nominated for a Teaching Award in the Best Lecturer category. As well as teaching and supporting Secondary RE trainees, Geoff is contributing to research with Karen Walshe on the meaning of understanding in religious education, to the REsearchers project with Karen, Rob and Giles Freathy and Jonathan Doney. He is external examiner for Secondary RE at the University of Chester. He is editor of Professional Reflection in RE Today.

Career

Geoff began his teaching career in 1974 as a primary teacher. He also taught secondary aged pupils before leaving school teaching to take up a post (in 1989) at the Regional RE Centre (Midlands) where he worked on the Westhill Project (a major project developing a multi faith approach top RE) and was involved in CPD work in local authorities, which included organising visits to religious communities for teachers, students, educational administrators, faith groups etc. He subsequently became director of the Centre. In 2000 he moved to the School of Education in the University of Birmingham. Geoff was, for ten years, the secretary to the National Association of Standing Advisory Councils on Religious Education (NASACRE).
