Dr Lindsay Hetherington
Senior Lecturer in Science Education, PGCE Secondary Programme Director

My current research brings together dialogic education and new materialism to explore science teaching and learning; and teacher education, development and retention. I am interested in the ways in which the materiality and messiness of real classroom practice works is entangled with classroom dialogue and the potential for creative science education as a result. My research interests are broad, but they are all rooted in a belief that science is fundamentally concerned with questioning and experimentation with the world; a core belief that also drives my perspective as a researcher and teacher. I have therefore engaged with research into teaching diverse science students using an adaptable dialogic approach; inquiry-based science education; creativity in science education and the impact of risk, uncertainty and agency in teacher education.

Methodologically, I use both qualitative and quantitative methods, and often a complexity theoretical stance, to engage with and understand the messiness and uncertainty of real classrooms.

I lead the Secondary PGCE Programme at Exeter University and the Secondary Science PGCE courses,, teach across a range of Masters' level modules on the MA Education, and supervise EdD and PhD students. I enjoy using a range of approaches in my teaching, drawing on research evidence alongside my own experience as a teacher to inform my pedagogy and model different teaching approaches for my students.

PhD candidates interested in working with me are welcome to get in touch - but formal applications should be submitted centrally.
