Dr Ruth Newman
Senior Lecturer in Language Education

I teach on the Exeter Secondary English PGCE, and am a University Visiting Tutor for PGCE School Direct Distance. I am also a member of the Centre for Research in Writing.

My research interests focus upon the role of talk in teaching and learning. Particular interests include the teaching of collaborative talk, the role of metatalk, and the potential of dialogic pedagogies for writing. I have worked on the Pearson funded Grammar at GCSE project, and I was Principal Investigator for the Powerful Learning Conversations project (Youth Sports Trust) which investigated the impact of feedback on attainment. My PhD focused on the teaching of collaborative talk in the secondary English classroom. Having recently joined the Centre for Research in Writing, I am reapplying my talk-related research in the context of writing.

Before joining Exeter, I worked as a Secondary English teacher.

PhD awarded June 2014, MSc, PGCE English with Drama.
