Dr Alun Morgan

Overview

After graduating with a BSc in Geography from Swansea University in 1987 and a PGCE in Secondary Geography (with Integrated Sciences) from Cardiff University in 1988, I taught Geography in secondary schools for ten years.  My first appointment was at Churston Grammar School in Torbay, Devon and I then moved to be Second in Department at Cathays High School, a multicultural inner city comprehensive in Cardiff.  I was Education Director of Ecocentrig - the Cardiff Environment Centre during a year long secondment from teaching in 1998-9.  I then took up the innovative teacher advisory post of Education for Sustainable Development Officer for Worcestershire County Council.  In 2002 I moved into Higher Education as Lecturer in Geography Education at the Institute of Education, London where I taught on the PGCE and MA courses and undertook PhD Supervision.  In January 2009 I moved to London South Bank University to become Senior Lecturer in Education for Sustainability where I Co-Directed the Education for Sustainability Masters Programme, taught on the EdD Programme, and was instrumental in setting up the London RCE (Regional Centre of Expertise in Education for Sustainable Development).  I returned to Devon and took up a a Research Fellowship at the Graduate School of Education at the University of Exeter.  I am currently a Lecturer in Education at the Plymouth Institute of Education.

Research interests

My research interests are: Geographical Education, Environmental Education (EE), Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship (ESDGC), Place Based Education, Science Education for Diversity, Place and Environment as themes in children's and cross-over literature

My PhD Thesis is entitled 'Minding the World: Integral Transformative Learning for Geographical and Environmental Wisdom'.  This was a conceptual work exploring place and landscape as integral foci for education drawing on philosophical, psychological, geographical, environmental and educational discourses.
