Overview

Deborah Osberg has an interdisciplinary background, traversing both scientific and philosophical domains. She held a tenured appointment in the Zoology Department at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa before accepting a PhD studetnship in Educational Theory, at The Open University in the UK in 2001.  Following her PhD (completed 2005), which was largely epistemological in orientation, she has conducted research in Educational Theory that draws on ideas from biology, physics, philosophy, science studies and poststructuralist theory. She is co-author (with Gert Biesta) of Complexity Theory and the Politics of Education (Sense Publishers) and has written numerous articles which explore the notion of education from an 'emergentist' perspective.

Osberg is the Co-lead of the Creativity and Emergent Educational Furures Network (CEEN) in the Graduate School of Education, and was Editor-in-chief of Complicity: An International Journal of Complexity and Education between 2007-2011. She is currently the Director of the MSc in Educational Research and Pathway Lead for the Professional Doctorate in Education.

Research

Research interests

I am disturbed by Bourdieu and Passeron's claim that however education is conceived, it is necessarily a tool for social and cultural reproduction (and hence a tool that perpetuates social inequality). Consequently, my research is largely inspired by questions about:

  • whether education can be conceived as opening spaces of new possibility rather than only inculcating people into existing spaces of possibility (which is to colonise).
  • whether education can be theorised as an end-in-itself rather than only as a curricular mechanism to effect some other, pre-existing political or moral  end (given that such ends are  ultimately colonising, no matter how veiled).

The 'methodologies' I draw on to explore such questions are informed by 'post' thinking, in its many forms. In this regard, I understand my research as post-disciplinary, post-methodological, post-paradigmatic, and post-critical. I have long been inspired by the notion of emergence, and more recently by developments that seem to be clustering around the ideas of 'posthumanism' and 'agentic materialism' (also known as new materialism).

I am interested in taking on doctoral students whose research in some way touches on themes connected with critical, emancipatory, decolonising, intercultural, emergentist and posthumanist themes in education.
