I needed to gain a Masters in Education in order to extend my contract as an English teacher at the Canadian University of Dubai in the U.A.E. I had looked in detail at the courses offered in the U.A.E, but was reluctant to commit to any of them because I felt an MEd from my home country would be more advantageous. Exeter University’s Summer Intensive MEd program provided the perfect solution for me: I could work towards a British Masters' qualification, continue working in the U.A.E, and receive tutor and peer face-to-face contact in the summer months.

The learning curve over the last two years has been staggering and I feel much more confident and professional as a result. I found the course challenging as well as rewarding; not only in the content, but in the balance between a full time job, studying and other life commitments. The course has improved my practical and theoretical knowledge of teaching English to speakers of other languages and feedback from my students and colleagues has shown me I am becoming more skilled as a teacher, which has been great. As a result, I have been given opportunities to design and implement independent learning courses and have co-chaired alternative assessment committees. I feel it is also worth mentioning the financial rewards I have experienced as a result of studying; the MEd was a precondition for extending my contract, but it has also resulted in me moving through the salary bands as I have become more experienced and qualified.

My experience at Exeter has been thoroughly positive and I have gained so much from taking this course. The south west of England is a joy to experience and Exeter city is both beautiful and historical. The tutors provided an excellent standard of teaching and continued to support me via email after I had left campus. The library also has a vast amount of literature available through the University's website, so even when you are continents away you still feel connected. All in all, I have benefited academically, economically, and personally through studying on the MEd TESOL Summer Intensive, and I would certainly recommend it.
