Kelly Scrivener from Devon Chambers explains what life is really like to aspiring barristers

College of Social Sciences and International Studies hosts "Barrister's evening" with Lincoln's Inn

A networking evening took place for budding barristers from all subject disciplines on Wednesday 20th March 2013. Hosted jointly by the College of Social Sciences and International Studies and Lincoln's Inn, the evening was a mix of informative talks on the realities of life as a barrister combined with a chance to network and for students  to "grill a barrister".

Highlights of the evening were a candid view of what life is like as a  barristers representing clients on criminal charges and what the challenges are in the profession with ever more stringent financial cuts to legal aid.

Lincoln's Inn supported the event, inviting judges and barristers from the Inn to attend.  Joanna Robinson, Deputy Under Treasurer (Education) commended the initiative.

"I really enjoyed coming and speaking to the students at Exeter Uni who were bright, well informed and were asking some very pertinent questions.  It confirmed for me, as trips of this type always do, how important it is that those  considering a career at the Bar have the opportunity of speaking to those who are already doing the job or are connected with the Bar in other ways."

The event was well received by the students who attended who appreciated having the opportunity to gain a greater depth of knowledge about the profession.
