Law students explore new horizons on internship programme in Taiwan

Earlier this year, Dr Joseph Lee from the University of Exeter’s Law School visited law firm Lee and Li and was able to agree with partners from the firm that up to two places on their internship programme could be offered to Exeter law students who fulfilled the application criteria.  Lee and Li is the largest law firm in Taiwan and they receive hundreds of applications every year from around the globe for their paid internship programme.

The successful students were Patricia Machimbarrena and Matthew Lai.  Patricia, who is currently on the LLB European / Maîtrise en Droit programme, a double degree in both English and French law, described her experience as being both intellectually challenging and culturally eye-opening. "My tasks were not merely limited to drafting and editing but also involved research, analysis and visits to court hearings as well as to the Taiwanese Intellectual Property Court. The experience was a success thanks to the people at the firm. I can honestly say I have never encountered such hospitality, respect and warmth. Informal lunches and dinner events were frequent, and weekend visits were organised to show the foreign interns around Taipei."

Matthew, who graduated with the LLB in July 2013, explained how well organised the internship programme was. "The internship program itself is well structured, they have around 30 interns at the same time in summer and they come from different countries like Korea, Japan, Malaysia and Spain. Each of us was assigned with a mentor who looked after us and guided us through the tasks which are designated for interns. Individual associates or partners also gave you task, they were always willing to teach and I have learned so much from my short period there."

Lee and Li’s internship programme administrator summed up the students’ contribution: "This past summer Lee and Li offered our internship program first time to Exeter Law School.  We were very glad to have Patricia and Matthew and the other 30 or so interns with us.  With their diverse backgrounds and legal trainings from different jurisdictions, they have provided abundant and meaningful contribution to our practice, and shared with our colleagues’ new insights and knowledge in many legal topics.  Students from Exeter Law School are very much welcomed to join our internship program.  We look forward to meeting you next year!"
