MA in Gender and Identity in the Middle East

Location

This programme is taught at the Streatham Campus in Exeter.

Programme overview

This Masters programme is designed for graduates with no prior knowledge of Gender and Middle East Studies as well as those who would like to develop their understanding of this subject field.

This programme explores the relationships between gender roles and conceptions of individual and national identity in mainly the Middle East, but also the broader Islamic world and the West. It addresses issues related to the diversity of Muslim cultures and societies in different geographical, social, cultural and political contexts with a focus both on contemporary and past history. Students will develop an understanding of the significant impact that changing and diverse gender relationships and identities have on social, cultural, economic and political developments and vice versa.

These issues are seldom brought together, despite the fact that identity formation and identity politics today cut across regions in new and dynamic ways. The MA in Gender and Identity in the Middle East reflects these contemporary realities and addresses gender and transnationalism in an integrated and analytically coherent way.
