MA in North African Politics

Location

This programme is taught at the Streatham Campus in Exeter.

Programme overview

This Masters programme is open to graduates with no prior background in politics or North African studies, as well as those who would like to develop their existing knowledge of this subject.

The programme covers key issues in the debate on the status of democracy in contemporary North Africa and discusses the forces that aid the persistence of competitive authoritarianism in the region. You will also contrast and compare the major Islamist movements: their origins, ideologies, behaviours and their impact on North African politics.

You will study, compare and analyse the political systems and elections of Egypt, Algeria and Morroco and the interactions between Islamists, ruling regimes, political institutions, religious establishments, and civil society in Egypt, Sudan, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, and Mauritania.

Throughout the programme you will also develop a range of transferable skills applicable to both further academic study and the employment market. By completing this programme you will be able to confidently utilise recent Islamist terminology and undertake independent research. You will also have experience of master's level comparative and political analysis involving the location, use and analysis of secondary and primary data.
