All undergraduate Arabic language students on a four-year programme spend their second year at one of our accredited Arabic language study centres. Students on our programme in Arabic and Persian spend half the year at one of the Arabic centres and the other half at the University of Shiraz in Iran, subject to Foreign Office advice.
The year abroad is an excellent opportunity for students of Arabic to become immersed in Arabic culture and to gain fluency in the Arabic Language. There are many opportunities for travel and meeting new people. Overall, it is an exciting, enriching and rewarding experience.
Venues
At the moment, the following venues are available for year abroad study:
- Arabic Language Centre, University of Damascus
- Language Centre, University of Jordan
- International Language Institute (ILI), Cairo
- Institut Francais Du Proche-Orient, Damas, Syria
- The Arabic Language Institute in Fez, Morocco
The list of study venues is subject to change due to current events and evaluation by the University.

Year abroad photography competition
Every year, students take many pictures during their year abroad. At the end of the first term after their return, some of these masterpieces are displayed at the Institute. A panel chooses the best and the winning photographers receive cash prizes.
HRH Prince Alwaleed Al Saud scholarship for short study courses abroad
Undergraduate students pursuing a single or combined honours degree within the Institute may apply for this scholarship to further their studies. Students may spend 4-8 weeks in an Arab country to study Arabic or gather research material. They may be enrolled in one of the above institutions or they may go, with the approval of the Institute, to another place of their choice. Students may be awarded a grant of up to £1,000.
