2. Description of the Programme

This four-year programme enables you to combine a complete LLB in English law with a year in a foreign law faculty. You’ll be able to study in France, Germany, Poland, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Hungary, the Netherlands, Iceland or Ireland and can undertake additional language tuition in the first two years to help you develop sufficient competence in your chosen language to follow the programme in the year abroad.

All our undergraduate degree programmes are accredited by the Law Society and have a series of compulsory modules which give you exemption from the academic stage of professional training. On graduation you can proceed to the Solicitors Legal Practice Course (LPC) or Bar Professional Training Course.

3. Educational Aims of the Programme

1. To provide students with a thorough knowledge of the foundation subjects of English and EU law which meets the requirements set by the Law Society and the Bar for the academic stage of legal training.
2. To enable students to extend their legal knowledge and understanding beyond the foundation subjects of English law by providing them with a basic knowledge and understanding of selected elements of the law of another European jurisdiction.
3. To enable students to identify, locate and critically appraise English legal materials and those of another European legal system.
4. To enable students to apply the principles of law and legal rules in both common law and civil law jurisdictions.
5. To encourage students to reason logically, supporting the process with authority.
6. To provide students with the opportunity to enhance and develop their written and oral communication skills in English and another language.
7. To provide students with the educational and cultural experience of studying in a university abroad.
8. To provide students with the necessary personal and key skills to enable them to develop as independent, autonomous and reflective individuals and generally as developing professionals.

4. Programme Structure

The year abroad is taken in Stage 3 and is spent at a university with which the University of Exeter has partnership links through the ERASMUS+ student exchange programme. In a given year, the partners on offer may include the Universities of: Aix-Marseille, France; Paris Sud, France; Strasbourg, France; Dresden, Germany; Munster, Germany; Bucerius Law School, Germany; Szeged, Hungary; Akureyri, Iceland; Dublin, Ireland; Bocconi (Milan), Italy; Bologna, Italy; Wroclaw, Poland; Deusto (Bilbao), Spain; Rey Juan Carlos (Madrid), Spain; Geneva, Switzerland; Maastricht, The Netherlands; Groningen, The Netherlands. Modules are chosen from a list of prescribed modules offered by the host institution as agreed between the host institution and the Law School, which in total amount to 120 credits (60 ECTS credits).

The performance of the student in the year abroad counts towards the classification of the Exeter degree. A single mark is calculated for the year abroad based on the examination performance of the students in their host institutions. Where appropriate, each module is weighted in accordance with its ECTS credit rating. For the purpose of attributing an Exeter mark to the year abroad, conversion tables approved by the external examiners are used to translate the marks obtained abroad by the students to Exeter marks.

You may take option modules as long as any necessary prerequisites have been satisfied, where the timetable allows and if you have not already taken the module in question or an equivalent module. Descriptions of the individual modules are given in full on the College web site. 

You will take modules adding up to 120 credits each year. In either your second or third year, you may also choose to take 30 credits in a subject outside law, subject to prior approval.

Your third year will be spent at the law faculty of one of our European partner institutions. Your study hours will be set by the host institution and you will undertake modules equivalent to 120 credits. You will be required to show appropriate evidence of satisfactory attendance and performance during your year abroad.

Key skills are an integral part of the degree programme. Particular aspects of the programme focus on personal and key skills development.
Workshops encourage students to work independently and in groups with the aim of presenting and criticising materials in interesting and varied forms (skills 12-20). An innovative feature of the course is the Introduction to Law [Law 1012] group work project, which provides student groups with the experience of applying their legal knowledge as a group to practical legal issues in the community. Therefore this particularly encourages the students in skills 12,13,15,16,17,19,20; essays (skills 12,14,15,16,17,18,19,20); lectures (12,14,15,18,19,20); prepared problem solving and substantive lectures (12,13,15,16,18,19,20); legal skills workshops (skills 12,13,15,16,18,19,20). Personal Development Planning and Personal Tutor meetings focus upon a students development of all key skills and their ability to reflect upon this and in particular skill 19.

Condonement is the process that allows you to be awarded credit (and so progress to the next stage or, in the final stage, receive an award), despite failing to achieve a pass mark at a first attempt. You are not entitled to reassessment in condoned credit. Regulations on condonement can be found in the Handbook for Assessment, Progression and Awarding for Taught Programmes.

Assessment and Awards

8. College Support for Students and Students' Learning

Personal and Academic Tutoring

It is University policy that all Colleges should have in place a system of academic and personal tutors. The role of academic tutors is to support you with individual modules; the role of personal tutors is to provide you with advice and support fo the duration of your programme, and this support extends to providing you with details of how to obtain support and guidance on personal difficulties such as accommodation, financial difficulties and sickness. You can also make an appointment to see individual teaching staff.

SSLCs enable students and staff to jointly participate in the management and review of the teaching and learning provision.

Learning Resources

The University Library maintains its principal collections in the main library buildings on the Streatham and St Luke's campuses, together with a number of specialist collections in certain Colleges. The total Library collection comprises over a million volumes and 3000 current periodical subscriptions.

IT Services

A wide range of IT services are provided throughout the Exeter campuses, including open-access computer rooms, some of which are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Helpdesks are maintained on the Streatham and St Luke's campuses, while most study bedrooms in halls and flats are linked to the University's campus network.

Student Support Services

The University provides many support services including health and wellbeing, multifaith chaplaincy, family support, the Students' Guild and international student support.

10. Admissions Criteria

11. Regulation of Assessment and Academic Standards

Each academic programme in the University is subject to an agreed College assessment and marking strategy, underpinned by institution-wide assessment procedures.

The security of assessment and academic standards is further supported through the appointment of External Examiners for each programme. External Examiners have access to draft papers, course work and examination scripts. They are required to attend the Board of Examiners and to provide an annual report.
