Postgraduate student life in the Law School
We seek to provide a supportive and friendly environment for postgraduate students in the Law School. All students are allocated a personal tutor or mentor and a vibrant Student Staff Liaison Committee exists to facilitate discussion between students and staff on teaching and learning related issues. We deliberately cultivate a policy of openness and approachability. Teaching members tend to be around the School most of the time, and, if you have a particular point you would like to discuss, members of the School are of course happy to help.
We regard the international context as very important to our postgraduate community. We welcome students from all over the world, with students from over 70 countries studying in the School over the last five years sharing insights from many different legal systems and traditions. As you might expect, we also regard interaction between students as a vital part of our learning process. Our graduate programmes aim to draw a healthy balance between taught and research degrees, and to encourage you to exchange ideas with each other and with teaching members of the School. You will have an unrivalled opportunity to develop skills of independent study and research, informal writing, oral presentation and group work. In short, we try to provide an open scholarly community where students and teachers can flourish and share insights with each other.
You will also be part of the wider College of Social Sciences and International Studies and will have plenty of opportunity to mix with students and staff from other disciplines and take part in events such as the College's annual postgraduate conference. The Graduate Research School team also provides a friendly point of contact for research students and is a useful source of information about research training and studying for your PhD.
