Supervision by Experts
The Law School enjoys a long-standing reputation as one of the most distinguished centres of legal research in the UK. It attracts academics, visiting lecturers and students from across the globe. In the latest Research Assessment Exercise (2008), the UK Government’s main measure of quality of universities’ research, 75 per cent of research from the Law School was judged to be of international quality, with 45 per cent rated as either world-leading or internationally excellent.
We have recognised Centres of excellence in Legal History and Family Law and are actively developing our already strong expertise in human rights; commercial law; intellectual property; legal ethics; and legal and political philosophy; and are actively recruiting research students in these fields. We were also one of the first university Law Schools to teach EU Law and we have an established Centre for European Legal Studies (CELS). Staff specialisms can be found here and cover a wide range of legal and socio-legal issues.
The subject-matter of your research is chosen by you. Application advice. We hold regular Presentation Days where students can develop their ideas and presentation skills; School staff and other postgraduates attend and contribute. We organise ‘min-vivas’ annually. For other research training see here.
As well as forming a close relationship with your supervisor, who will have the expertise appropriate to your chosen area of study, you will be a valued part of our research culture, attending workshops where research papers are presented, and with opportunities to hear eminent scholars such as those who give the Hamlyn, Bracton and Lasok Lectures.
Law Library
The Lasok Library, spanning two floors with 400 reader places, is housed in the Amory Building, where the Law School is located.
