Tour of the European Union and European Community Institutions

This one week tour, offered by the School of Law, presents a fantastic opportunity to see at first hand the workings of the institutions of the European Union and European Community in Strasbourg, Luxembourg and Brussels.

Places are limited to 40 and are allocated on a first come, first served basis.

There are some things which are priceless in life and this tour was one of them. Everything was very well organised and the whole tour was excellent value for money. Indeed the week spent on the Tour was the best week of my postgraduate study at Exeter. l would, therefore, highly recommend it as it was such a great experience.

If you are interested in EU law this tour is indispensable. Likewise, friends whose subject was not law gained a tremendous amount from the Tour. l learnt so much which l am sure l couldn't have learned from seminars. We visited most of the major institutions of the EU and three different countries. We had a lot of fun, tried culturally different and delicious food, and overall spent a great time making very good and new friendships. It was like a dream tour.

Tour programme

We aim to try and visit most of the following institutions in addition to allowing you free time to explore the cities.

Strasbourg

  • The Council of Europe
  • European Court of Human Rights
  • European Parliament

Luxembourg

  • Court of Justice of the European Communities
  • European Investment Bank

Brussels

  • European Commission
  • Committee of the Regions
  • European Economic and Social Committee
  • Council of the European Union (Council of Ministers)

The Tour was an essential part of the year spent at Exeter. We gained a valuable insight into the work of the EU institutions and, in particular, I really appreciated the discussions with the members of the institutions and fellow students. Furthermore, attending a public session at the European Parliament and a court hearing in the European Court of Justice were both extremely impressive. All the other parts of the programme (hotels, meetings, free time, group lunches and the group diner) were very well organised.

  • at least two group lunches and one group evening meal
  • travel insurance

Please note: drink and meals en route, plus lunches and dinner during the tour are excluded from the price, with the exception of one or two lunches and one evening meal.

The whole trip was fantastic, it was really good fun and it was a great opportunity to meet an extremely diverse group of people, some of whom I hope will be friends for life!

Visiting the institutions was really interesting and I felt like I learned more in one week than I thought was possible! The Council of Europe, the European Parliament and the Council of the EU were my favourite institutions, because of the presentations given and the engagement of the speakers with our questions.

The evenings were a really good opportunity to socialise and meet people from a range of different backgrounds and academic disciplines. The organisation of the tour was excellent and there was a great build up to Brussels, which was definitely the highlight of the tour for the city, the hotel, the atmosphere, and of course the night-life!

The biggest problem with the tour was that it went far too quickly!
