The Law School is committed to excellence in research. Individual scholars work in a wide range of fields from the historical and theoretical to the socio-legal. The School has three long standing research groupings: Family Law, Legal History and International and Human Rights Law. It is currently developing its profile in European Law and Science, Culture and the Law. Underlying this scholarship and cutting edge research is a commitment to making the outcomes of our research beneficial and accessible to the public, the legal profession and the government. We aim to develop and promote areas of research activity that are of significant impact in influencing policy, legislation, regulatory frameworks, legal process, theoretical parameters and an historical understanding of the implications of law. We have a strategic interface with alumni in the legal profession and actively identify opportunities for the potential practical application of our research.

Research culture
We have a vigorous research culture within the Law School which is contributed to by a flourishing community of full- and part-time postgraduate research students and enhanced by our location within the College of Social Sciences and International Studies. Researchers benefit from interaction with colleagues within other disciplines, notably the Centre for European Studies and the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies and actively encourage liaison through interdisciplinary research projects.
Seminar series
A stimulating programme of research seminars is organised each year enabling staff and postgraduate students to experience cutting edge research by members of the academic and legal community both within and outside of Exeter. Integrating MPhil and PhD students in Law into the School's research community, the seminars ensure lively debate and a breadth of experience from jurisdictions across the world.
Conferences
Researchers benefit from the opportunity to attend prestigious conferences held at Exeter. The 19th British Legal History Conference was held here in July 2009 and an international symposium on 'Pluralism and European Private Law' was held under the auspices of the Centre for European Legal Studies in March 2011.
Public lectures
The Law School hosts a number of yearly public lectures on themes relating to its research strengths.
