Dr Emma Marshall

Overview
Dr Emma Marshall joined the Law School in September 2020 following completion of her PhD in Human Geography at the University of Exeter.
In response to the limited accessibility of free advice for immigration and asylum matters in South West England, Emma’s doctoral research explored the experiences of people seeking advice in the region and opportunities to improve provision. Emma is interested in addressing structural and systemic forms of injustice, particularly in relation to border control and the immigration system, legal aid and the policy decisions and practices that often exclude and marginalise particular groups of people.
As part of her doctoral studies, Emma helped to set up the Exceptional Case Funding Clinic for legal aid applications as part of the Community Law Clinic at the University of Exeter. More recently, Emma has been working with others to establish a Policy Clinic within the Law School, which aims to provide students to conduct research with external organisations. Emma has previously worked for regional and national charities and is interested in developing collaborative ways of working both within and beyond academic settings.
Emma teaches on the Law LLB programme and is Deputy Senior Tutor (PGT).

Research
I have two key areas of research interest:
1. Migration and asylum
In particular, experiences of immigration systems and how communities respond to these. From my experience of working in the voluntary sector I am interested in activist approaches to challenging the injustices produced by immigration control.
2. Access to justice and legal aid policy
I have worked on national policy issues around access to justice, particularly in the context of legal aid provision and the impact of the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012.

Biography
Emma is originally from Exeter and first studied in the Law School in 2008/2009 on the LLM in International Human Rights Law. She also has an undergraduate degree in Politics and International Studies from the University of Warwick, and an MRes in Critical Human Geographies. Emma has previously taught in the Geography department and Politics department at the University of Exeter.
