Programme overview
Programme Director: Dr Sue Prince
This is our most popular degree programme and takes three years full-time to complete. It is fully accredited by the Law Society and Bar Council and covers all the foundation subjects that are required to pass the Academic Stage that forms part of the professional qualification as a barrister or solicitor. On graduation you will be able proceed to the Solicitors’ Legal Practice Course or Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC). After a core first year, the programme becomes increasingly flexible in years two and three. You can choose modules from a diverse set of options and design a programme to suit your developing interests.
You will have opportunities to see law from a variety of perspectives and to gain practical experience of law in action. For example, through the Legal Foundations first year module you will learn about the legal system and legal profession and you will work in a group to analyse legal institutions such as the courts, lawyers, or tribunals by visiting them and talking to relevant personnel in order to see and analyse how they work. You will also have the option to choose between a Work Experience or an Advocacy module, both of which will help you to develop your personal, legal and academic skills and enable you to articulate them. Students have worked in the Devon Law Centre, law courts and the chambers of London barristers.
UK/EU students may study our LLB Law on a part-time basis, based at the University, over six years. This option is not available to international students due to visa restrictions.

Study abroad
Opportunities to study abroad are available through our LLB with European Study and LLB with International Study degrees in Exeter, and our LLB with European Study and LLB with International Study degrees in Cornwall.

In deciding where to study law I was conscious that my university experience would be shaped both by the quality of the teaching available but equally by the experiences available outside of the lecture theatre. It took only minimal research to discover the high regard in which law at Exeter is held. To get a real view of what studying at Exeter would be like I attended an Open Day and was impressed by the positive experiences of the students that I met. With both the quality of lifestyle and quality of teaching confirmed I was confident that choosing to study at Exeter would be a good decision. Read Michael's full profile.
