Event encourages female lawyers of the future

A group of leading women in law have made up the panel at an event organised by the Employability Team in the College of Social Sciences and International Studies at the University of Exeter, designed to encourage women to enter the legal profession.

Chaired by Deborah Cochrane, Visiting Lecturer in Law, and including Bronwen Courtenay-Stamp, a Partner in Trowers & Hamlins incorporating Stones, the all-female panel explained their career paths from their law degree at Exeter to their current positions.

An interactive Q&A session explored further themes such as the opportunities for progression to Partner in a law firm, the variety of in-house and specialist law recruitment roles available and tips and advice to current students on having a successful and fulfilling law career.

The talk was organised by the Employability Team in the College of Social Sciences and International Studies at the University of Exeter. It was followed by an hour-long networking session where students were able to benefit from the opportunity to directly ask questions to panellists as well as network with their peers across year groups and disciplines.

Bronwen Courtney-Stamp said: “It was a privilege to be part of the panel and to have played a role in encouraging more young women to enter the legal profession. It is important that we widen and improve access to the law for women interested in pursuing it as a career.”

Julia Paci, Employability and Outreach Manager at the University of Exeter, added: “We would like to thank the panellists for joining us and volunteering their time to this event, which students commented was a “refreshing change” from the usual employer presentations. We were able to have an in-depth discussion of all themes due to the wide range of experience that each panellist has had throughout her career.”

Bronwen Courtenay-Stamp is a Partner in Trowers & Hamlins LLP incorporating Stones and Head of its Travel and Insurance Team. The team was recently named International Legal Services Provider of the Year at the prestigious International Travel and Health Insurance Journal (ITIJ) Awards 2015.
