College hosts thank you event for Academic Reps and Change Agents

On Monday 8 December, Academic Representatives and Change Agents attended the College of Social Sciences and International Studies' (SSIS) Christmas reception in the Pieminister space in Devonshire House. Hosted by the Associate Dean for Education, Professor Wendy Robinson, the event was organised to thank the students for their hard work and dedication this term, and to hear ideas and gain feedback to take forward into next term.

Wendy spoke of the fantastic achievements the college has seen since September thanks to the academic representatives. Several targets and records have been met and exceeded this term: we have 20 Students as Change Agents projects within SSIS already, focusing on a range of areas including diversity, political engagement and academic success. We also saw the highest voter turnout ever for Research Uncovered and will see Dr Christina Walton from the Law School giving an open lecture next term on 'The ability of 'political' trusts to achieve charitable status'.

College Manager Simon Wright was also in attendance, along with Guild Representatives including VP Education Ben Street who also spoke of the great work of the SSIS students.  Simon said, “It was great to see our SSLC reps again and to thank them for all their hard work this term. I am always so impressed and encouraged by all they are doing to help us deliver an excellent student experience.”

Students were encouraged throughout the evening to share feedback with the academic staff present in an informal setting, as well as meeting other students and discussing projects and ideas. Jason Chang, Sociology, Philosophy and Anthropology 2nd year rep and Change Agent said “it was a great time to hear about the collaborations of the students,” and Law Subject Chair Johannes Neumann said “it was a smashing evening, and it was great to see so many academic reps having fun”.

Student engagement is something the college is really focusing on improving this year, so we are proud of the progress so far and look forward to more fantastic projects next term! Subject Chairs and National Student Survey representatives will be invited to an NSS Launch Lunch early next term to begin the feedback drive.
