Professor Karp on the steps of the New Zealand Parliment.

Professor Jeffrey Karp appears before NZ Select Committee

Professor Karp appeared before the Justice and Electoral Law Select Committee in Wellington to address whether voters made informed decisions on the 2011 referendum on reform to New Zealand's electoral system.

Voters chose to retain the existing mixed member proportional system (referred to as MMP), which was introduced in 1996, by a margin of 58 percent. Karp's analysis suggests that partisan self-interest, ethnicity, and a preference for power sharing arrangements were the primary determinants of support.
