The Middle East and North African (MENA) Politics group (joined within the Institute of Arabic and Islamic Studies) makes Exeter one of the UK’s largest groupings of scholars on the Middle East and North Africa.
The interests of the group range from democratisation in the Middle East and Palestinian refugees to the theme of Arab exile. Current research projects in the group cover politics and life in contested cities, salon democracy, the North African Diaspora in Europe, Moroccan politics and state-society relations in Syria.
Members of staff in this research group have extensive experience outside the University including work with the BBC's external service, the FCO, international NGOs and development agencies, in various government positions and senior management posts, as diplomats and as consultants for business, government and international organisations.
This cluster offers an MA in Middle East Politics (see also MA in International Relations of the Middle East). The MA programme is one of few of its kind in Europe. Drawing on expertise in the Politics Department and the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies, the programme examines a wide range of topics, including the political economy of the Middle East, international relations of the Middle East, Islam and politics, and democratisation.
