Dr Victoria Basham
Biography
After obtaining a first class honours degree in Social Policy and Politics at the University of Bristol in July 2002 I went on to undertake doctoral studies in the School for Policy Studies at the same institution in October 2002. I was awarded an ESRC-Ministry of Defence CASE Studentship to conduct my doctoral research into social diversity and equality policies and issues in the British Armed Forces (awarded 2007). My thesis was supervised by Paul Higate and it involved extensive ethnographic fieldwork with members of the British military. After completing my doctoral research, I undertook an ESRC Postdoctoral Fellowship, also at the University of Bristol (2007-2002). During this time I became a visiting scholar at the Centre for International and Security Studies at York University in Toronto where I am still an external associate.
In 2008-2009 I taught at the University of Bristol where I was the unit convenor for an MSc course in Security Governance. During 2009 I undertook various research assistance roles which included conducting fieldwork interviews and participant observation with British Counter-Terrorism Security Advisors for a project at The Open University, Governing through the Future, led by Dr Claudia Aradau. I then joined the University of Exeter in September 2009.
In 2011 I won the Exeter Students Guild Teaching Award for Innovative Teaching. I have successfully completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice and I am a fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA).
