Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Relations

Aneta Brockhill joined the Politics Department at Penryn as a Lecturer in Politics and International Relations in June 2016. Previously she was an Associate Lecturer in the School of Law, Criminology and Government at the University of Plymouth where she obtained her doctorate, funded by the Centre for Research in Sustainable Leadership, Governance and Policy.

Aneta teaches modules on Politics and IR in the Middle East. She also teaches Key Concepts in Politics and International Relations and runs the US Field Trip. Built on the principles of decolonising education and critical pedagogies of compassion, Aneta’s teaching employs a plethora of decolonizing modes and strategies to create a classroom that is a site of decolonial learning, action-oriented engagement and transnational solidarity.

Research interests

Aneta’s research centres on different representations and understandings of violence and the implications of these for thinking about the phenomenon in contemporary conflicts. Her research is partly concerned with further developing and refining the conceptual framework of violence within peace and conflict studies. She is also interested in the discursive constructions of social practice, the cultural production and reproduction of representations of danger, as well as the security implications of policies of separation, which she has explored in the context of the Israel-Palestine 'conflict'. Her research is based on original data collection in Israel and Palestine which spans over two years. Her most current scholarly publications features in Third World Quarterly and Mediterranean Politics.

Informed by the theories of decoloniality, decolonial education and decolonial praxis, her research also focuses on decolonizing the knowledge production and pedagogy of the question of Palestine, and more broadly the politics in the Middle East.

She is also currently working on developing a narrative-based learning programme to engage in the teaching and learning of conflict analysis.

Research supervision

I am happy to supervise research students working on the question of Palestine, Israel’s occupation of Palestine, settler colonialism, violence and human security and decolonial approaches in IR.
