Biography

Originally from Chicago, Alison Harcourt gained a BA (Magna Cum Laude) in Politics and International Relations from Northern Illinois University, before completing an MA in International Political Economy at the University of Warwick (Department of Politics) and a PhD at the University of Manchester (Department of Government). Alison held research posts at the University of Warwick, University of Manchester and University of Oxford. She twice received Jean Monnet Fellowships at the European University Institute and was Visiting Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Common Goods in Bonn. She was appointed to the University of Exeter in 2004. Alison served as Director of the Information Society Network and was formerly Director of the Centre for European Studies before it was merged to form the Centre for European Governance in 2008. Alison was appointed Jean Monnet Chair in the Information Society by the European Commission in 2008. She has acted as consultant for and participated in working groups of the Council of Europe, European Commission, and national governments and is a member of the CPBF. She is presently lead expert for an Open Society Institute (Soros Foundation) project entitled "Pursuing the need for transparency of media financing and ownership" (2010 - 2012) and has been appointed to an invite-only AHRC group to input to OFCOM's media plurality inquiryin 2012. Alison is a also member of the ECPR, UACES, APSA, PSA, IAMCR, ECREA, ICA and SCHES (executive board member) and regularly presents at conferences.
