Dr Alison Harcourt
Other Information
Alison Harcourt was appointed Jean Monnet Chair in the Information Society by the European Commission in 2008. As a part of the Chair activity, she ran a three-year seminar series on the information society. A key focus was on policy and regulatory trends in both nationally and internationally. Discussions involved finding solutions to regulatory problems and were based around the citzen/consumer voice and/or civil society input into policy processes. This followed on from the Information Society Network (ISN) seminar series which brought together a network of researchers from different disciplinary backgrounds to work on similar issues under the theme of the information society. Researchers discussed, in an interdisciplinary way, the production, control, aesthetic, politics and policy-making, regulation, marketing, philosophy, distribution of and encounter with information. The purpose of these events was to raise awareness and encourage academic and public debate and work towards joint publications and research projects in the field.
Alison is also a member of the Centre for European Governance (CEG) which engages in the study of Europe and European integration. The aim of CEG is to promote and coordinate international excellence in research across the University. CEG staff are integrated into wider national and international research networks. The Centre runs regular workshops and seminars, hosts visiting scholars and coordinates 2 MA programmes and has close ties with the Centre for European Legal Studies based in the School of Law.
