Senior Research Fellow

Formerly Senior Lecturer in Agricultural Economics, School of Business and Economics, my external positions include Honorary Professor, Bila Tserkva State Agrarian University, Ukraine; Advisory Council Member, Institute of Rural and Agricultural Development, Polish Academy of Sciences; Editorial Board Member, 'Wies i Rolnictwo', Institute for Rural and Agricultural Development, Polish Academy of Sciences; Honorary Research Fellow, Royal Veterinary College, University of London; Visiting Lecturer, University of Copenhagen. A former President of the Society for Veterinary Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, I was made a Life Member in 2008.

Currently, my main research focus is the economics of animal health and welfare, in which context I work closely with colleagues in the Veterinary Epidemiology and Public Health Group, Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, at the Royal Veterinary College, University of London. A committed and enthusiastic teacher, I contribute to animal health economics modules of MSc programmes in Veterinary Epidemiology and the Control of Infectious Diseases in Animals (Royal Veterinary College, London University) and Veterinary Public Health (University of Copenhagen). Periodically, I also contribute economics expertise in review of EU and UK projects in the field of animal health and welfare.

My eclectic interests also include the economics of European integration, European agricultural and rural policies, and the economics of transition in central and eastern Europe. For over a decade I worked as a consultant to the Integration Policy Directorate, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Bulgaria, and over four years was Co-ordinator for the EU Joint European Project ‘AGFED’ – Agricultural and Food Economics Development in Ukraine. As for veterinary and related scientists, most recently I have specialised mainly at postgraduate level in teaching economics to non-specialist students. The two areas closest to my research interests are a) the economic aspects of European integration, in which capacity I have taught both at Exeter University and at universities in Hungary, Russia, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan, and b) the political economy of international agricultural policy. My current teaching contribution at Exeter University is on POLM073: Political Economy of Food and Agriculture.
