Biography

I grew up in Manchester, but did most of my growing up in Guyana, where I spent a 'gap year' teaching science in Anna Regina secondary school. After completing a BA in Philosophy and Psychology at the University of Oxford, I worked for a year at the OFFER school for street children in Calcutta, and, subsequently, at the Narmada Bachao Andolan ('Save the Narmada Movement') in Madhya Pradesh. I returned to Oxford to take the BPhil and DPhil in philosophy, supervised by G. A. Cohen. During that time I also spent time working with social movements in West Papua, Mexico, Cuba and the Middle East. After Oxford I worked for a year in Rwanda and Peru, teaching and writing. I joined Exeter in 2007. During the academic year 2009-2010 I was a Visiting Faculty Fellow at the Centre for Ethics, University of Toronto, and during 2012 I was a Hoover Fellow at the Hoover Chair for Economic and Social Ethics, Universite Catholique de Louvain. I am a member of the UK steering committee of Academics Stand Against Poverty.
