Dr Nigel Stone
Honorary Research Associate, Chief Executive Exmoor National Park Authority
Studied Zoology at Manchester University and obtained a PhD in 1980 for research into patterns of shell growth in bivalve molluscs.
Worked 14 years for Groundwork – a national group of charitable trusts undertaking environmental regeneration work in partnership with local authorities, voluntary groups, the private sector and the local community. Included a period of five years as founding director of a Groundwork Trust in West Cumbria.
Left Groundwork in 1997 to take up the post of Corporate Director at North Dorset District Council. As one of two directors and latterly as joint acting Chief Executive had particular responsibility for Project Management; Land & Property; Planning; Environmental Health; Waste Collection and Recycling; Economic Development; Housing and Local Agenda 21.
In October 1999, took up the post of Chief Executive at Exmoor National Park Authority.Chaired the South West Uplands Task Force from 2008 to 2010 overseeing a regional programme of action to help support livestock farming in Bodmin Moor, Dartmoor and Exmoor. Subsequently, has continued to chair the South West Uplands Network, a coalition of farming, landowning and conservation organisations, aimed at securing a viable future for the uplands of the South West.
