Professor Jack Vowles
Biography
Born in the UK near Bristol, I emigrated to New Zealand at the age of nine, and hold both British and New Zealand citizenships.
My BA degree is from the University of Auckland, New Zealand, where I did a joint major in Politics and History. I went on to be awarded an MA at Auckland, and from there, with the help of a Commonwealth Scholarship, went on to gain my PhD in Political Science at the University of British Columbia in 1980.
I took up my first ongoing appointment at the University of Auckland in 1982, and moved on to the University of Waikato to take up a Senior Lectureship in Politics in 1989. Promoted to Associate Professor in 1997, I took on the job of Chair of the Department for three years until 2000, when I was awarded a James Cook Research Fellowship. I returned to Auckland as a Professor in Political Studies in March 2002, and served as Head of Department from March 2003 for a three-year term, stepping down to go on a year's leave in 2006. I joined the Exeter Department in July 2007, becoming Head of Department in August 2009, for a two-year term.
