About the project

Children deprived of liberty are an invisible and often forgotten group in society. A large but as yet uncounted number of children are placed in conditions where they may be at risk of violence, abuse and torture, inhuman or degrading treatment. The health and level of neurodisability and trauma of these children and the impacts of deprivation of liberty on their wellbeing have never been the subject of a systematic inquiry at the global level. The UN Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty will document the situation of these children, examine the relevant international laws and standards, and the effectiveness of existing approaches. Our project will contribute to the UN Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty by providing guidance on key issues relating to children's health and wellbeing, particularly on neurodisabilities and vulnerabilities in light of international human rights law. By doing so, it aims to put neurodisabilities, health and wellbeing on the agenda for global development.
