There are many ways to become involved with the Centre's research

Research opportunities

We have a thriving community of PhD students researching a diverse range of topics at home and abroad on both a full and part-time basis. We welcome applications from prospective PhD students. The breadth of research supervision available can be seen by accessing the staff pages on this site. To discuss possible research topics, please contact Matt Lobley or Harry West in the first instance.

Other research positions within the Centre, from full-time vacancies to funded, project-related PhD placements, will be detailed on this page as they become available, as well as any other opportunities to engage with the Centre's research.

We are currently recruiting for an excellent doctoral student whose areas of interest complement those of our academics and our ongoing research programmes. We are looking for an ambitious scholar who is developing ideas for an independent research agenda in one of the following broad topics:

  • Farmer attitudes to and implementation of agri-environmental policies
  • Farming practices, wildlife and pests
  • Old and new forms of urban food production
  • The politics of sustainable land management
  • New entrants to farming: building knowledge and experience
  • The mental health and well-being of farming families
  • The future of family farming in the UK
  • Intergenerational succession in rural family businesses

The student will be supervised by Professor Matt Lobley and Dr. Angela Cassidy. The studentship, open to Home/EU applicants only, includes the Home/EU fee rate (currently £4,400 per annum) and a maintenance stipend at UK research council rates (currently £14,553 per annum).
