Dr Stephan Guttinger

Research Fellow

Stephan joined the team of the ERC-funded project 'A Process Ontology for Contemporary Biology (PROBIO)' in August 2014. Before he came to Egenis he worked for three years at the London School of Economics at the BIOS centre and the CPNSS. He holds a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the ETH Zurich and a MSc in Philosophy of Science from the LSE.

In his current research he not only draws on philosophy of biology but also on work done in philosophy of experimentation and in science studies. As part of the PROBIO project he mainly focuses on the macromolecular level and aims to develop an ecological/processual framework to account for the behaviour and features of these crucial entities.

Biography

Stephan holds a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the ETH Zürich (awarded in 2006), where he also worked as a postdoctoral research fellow in the group of Prof. Ulrike Kutay from 2006-2010. In 2011 he obtained an MSc in Philosophy of Science from the London School of Economics. He then worked at the (now closed) BIOS centre and the Centre for Philosophy of Natural and Social Science at LSE on a three-year project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (Title: 'From promise to production: the role of functional modules in synthetic biology'). In August 2014 he joined the PROBIO project at Egenis where he works as a research fellow.
