This module seeks to provide you with the conceptual and analytical tools required to understand and explain the nature and character of contemporary violent conflict. It will familiarise you with key theoretical debates related to causes of war; competing characterisation of contemporary conflicts (both intra- and inter-state, including intervention); and impact of dynamics of conflict on the cessation of hostilities and the ensuing peace. Theoretical interpretations of political violence will be contextualised in terms of ongoing cases of conflict in the Middle East and beyond.
