This module will enable you to delve beneath the surface of the public debate on statebuilding and nation-building through the examination of the interests and ideas lying behind contemporary intervention and the key policy debates under the 'war on terror'. The module will introduce you to the key theoretical approaches to international intervention, before going on to survey a number of case studies of international intervention with a particular focus on South East Europe and the Middle East. There are no pre-requisites for taking this module but you are required to read extensively. Teaching will be interactive and you are expected to take active role in weekly class discussions.
