On this module, you will receive a thorough introduction to historical and contemporary debates about the basic principles and methods underlying research in explanation in biology.  You will look at ideas about the nature of explanation, and the relation of explanations in biology to those provided by physics and chemistry; you will discuss the roles of nature and nurture in causing behaviour, and whether any behaviour is innate; and you will be introduced to recent thinking about the origin and evolution of life, and the impact of evolutionary ideas on biological classification; and you will consider the status of central concepts in terms of which living things are described, such as organism and species
