Excellence in education has become one of the main targets for the governments across the world. Thousands of policies and interventions have been developed to improve students’ educational outcomes, such as literacy or numerical skills, and to tackle social inequalities in education. But how do we know what policies work and what do not work? In this course, we will study methods for evaluating educational interventions and policies. The focus will be on quantitative evaluations conducted with randomised controlled trials and other quasi-experimental methods, but we will discuss the qualitative approach to evaluation as well. We will consider numerous practical examples of educational evaluations, both in the UK and internationally.
