Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) are increasingly popular subject choices in secondary schools and in this module you will examine a range of approaches to the teaching of these subjects from Key Stages 3 - 5. You will learn about generic aspects of teaching and learning secondary MFL, and about approaches used to teach German as your main language and either French or Spanish as a second language. The course is constantly evolving and changing to take account of the latest research both in MFL and the wider educational landscape.

We place considerable importance on collaborative learning and teaching both during university taught sessions and in our partnership schools in order to develop high levels of professional independence, autonomy and initiative. The course includes research-led, evidence-based and highly interactive lectures/workshops/practical sessions and directed study tasks to support you to address your professional development needs and the needs of the modern day MFL teacher. To take this module, you will normally need to possess an upper second class or first class Honours degree in your first language and have sufficient subject knowledge of your second language to enable you to teach to KS3 standard.
