This module is aimed at those who do not wish to choose a subject specialism, but are instead interested in developing knowledge, understanding and skills in research-inspired primary teaching and learning across the whole 5-11 curriculum.  The module prepares you to become a leader of curriculum innovation.  Recent research is used to support the development of a contemporary and critical view of primary education.  Practical workshops and seminars make up the taught component, with contributions from school partners.  The module takes its themes from the Cambridge Primary Review Trust which examines multiple facets of primary teaching and learning from national and international perspectives.

Taught sessions will be delivered via lectures, seminars, and workshops, as appropriate.

Other key elements of the module include:

Seminar Days: Four seminar days when you return to the university to share school-based work experiences and develop the links between theoretical and practical aspects of teaching

Activities Week: for you to gain an understanding the role of formal and informal learning environments in children’s educational development

On the Primary PGCE, you will learn and reflect on the skills and knowledge required by the programme’s credit-bearing and non-credit bearing modules throughout the year. You will need to think about the modules in relation to each other. To facilitate this, the learning and teaching activities and guided independent study described below are scheduled to occur across all three terms both in the context of your university taught course and in the context of your 24 weeks of applied professional experience in schools.
