LAWM107: EU Motor Insurance

This module descriptor refers to the 2017/8 academic year.

Module Aims

The aim of the module is to provide you with a comprehensive introduction to motor insurance law, giving you the opportunity to develop your understanding of the matters governed by the compulsory insurance regime as well as the limits and weaknesses of that regime. The module will emphasise the importance of motor insurance to the EU’s free
movement, setting the detailed law in its wider single market context. The module will focus on those measures which enhance the political objectives and functioning of the EU market.

On successfully completing the programme you will be able to:
Module-Specific Skills1. Demonstrate a detailed and systematic knowledge of the nature and operation of the compulsory motor insurance regime in the UK
2. Demonstrate a detailed and systematic knowledge of the nature and operation of the compulsory insurance regime in the EU, including the availability of compensation for accidents with a cross-border element
Discipline-Specific Skills3. Demonstrate detailed and comprehensive understanding of the operation of the complex web of case law, domestic legislation, EU Directives and international agreements as well as the relationships among them
4. Demonstrate flexible and innovative ability to analyse complex legal problems, to propose solutions, and to review critically the state of the law and whether any reform is needed
Personal and Key Skills5. Communicate and engage in debate about key legal concepts effectively, confidently and autonomously, orally and in writing, in a manner appropriate to both legal and market audiences.
