LAWM670: European Convention on Human Rights

Module Content

Syllabus Plan

Whilst the module’s precise content may vary from year to year, it is envisaged that the syllabus will cover the following topics:

1. Introduction to the European Convention on Human Rights: context, background, institutions, membership and methods of interpretation

2. Protection of substantive rights:

  • Right to life (article 2 ECHR)
  • Freedom from torture (article 3 ECHR)
  • Right to respect for private and family life (article 8 ECHR)
  • Freedom of thought, conscience and religion (article 9 ECHR)
  • Freedom of expression (article 10 ECHR)
  • Freedom of assembly and association (article 11 ECHR)

3. Procedural guarantees:

  • Right to liberty and security (Article 5 ECHR)
  • Right to a fair trial (article 6 ECHR) and Right to an effective remedy (article 13 ECHR)

4. Non-discrimination:

  • Prohibition of discrimination (article 14 ECHR) and Protocol no. 12 to the ECHR
