This module descriptor refers to the 2018/9 academic year.
Module Content
Syllabus Plan
Whilst the module’s precise content may vary from year to year, it is envisaged that the syllabus will cover some or all of the following topics:
- TheLegal framework: ILO conventions and regulations, European Social Charter, EU social policy directives, Human Rights conventions, regional treaties e.g. NAFTA, principles of private law regulating employment contracts, and representative examples from the legal framework of selected countries.
- Contextual evaluation: regulatory challenges presented by emerging trends such as technological innovation and artificial intelligence including the increasing automization of jobs.
- Goals and philosophical foundations of employment regulation: contestation between labour rights protection and economic goals such as flexibility and competitiveness.
- Social policy considerations: promoting health and safety, safeguarding jobs, providing decent work, preventing sweated labour and child labour, and protecting vulnerable workers.
- Evaluating social costs: identifying costs related to unemployment, income inequality, social security and welfare provision, and free movement of capital and workers across national and regional borders.
- Corporate governance principles: consultation of workers and worker representatives on the board of directors.
