Doing your PhD

Before you begin your studies, both the College and the University will send you detailed pre-arrival information about accommodation, induction activities, what you can expect when you arrive and many other things. In addition the Graduate Research School provides dedicated support for prospective students and can be contacted at any time.

All new postgraduate students will be invited to a Welcome Week programme. The programme will give you a formal introduction to the University as well as allowing you to spend some time in your academic discipline before your studies officially begin. It will also give you the chance to get involved with student societies and sports clubs, to settle into your accommodation and get to know the city and surrounding area.

All new students to the College are normally required to attend a one day workshop as part of the induction activities. You'll hear from current research students about what the first year is all about. The workshop also covers the PhD fundamentals, including:

  • improving your understanding of PhD study
  • what it means to be a professional researcher
  • considering ways you can plan and review your own development needs
  • managing the supervisory relationship
  • networking with other like-minded individuals
  • raising awareness of where to go for further PhD support and guidance.
