ARA2122: Themes in Modern Arabic Poetry

Module Aims

This module is intended for those of you with no prior knowledge of Arabic poetry. It focuses on Arabic poetry from the mid-nineteenth century to the present, tracing its transition from a classical to a modern art form. It covers a variety of different poetry schools and movements, studying them in their proper historical context and paying attention to matters of form. Aside from instruction in aspects of modern Arabic poetry, those of you on this module receive training in close reading and critical analysis.
