This module descriptor refers to the 2016/7 academic year.
Module Content
Syllabus Plan
Weeks 1-5: Intermediate Turkish Grammar (text-based study)
Week 6: Midterm exam
Week 7-9: Intermediate Turkish Grammar (text-based study)
Week 10-11: Review of entire class
Teaching varies between lectures and commentary on the main textbook (Yeni Hitit II), in-class readings, translation and discussion of Turkish texts; translation (Turkish >English, English> Turkish) exercises done collectively by the whole class; regular vocabulary reviews; the reading of poetic and prose texts aloud together; individual students give presentations of grammatical points or texts which they have studied or read at home. Handouts are provided regularly, including sheets that discuss difficult points of grammar, and literary texts (prose and poetry) to illustrate aspects of Turkish language. It is expected that all students will learn the proper pronunciation of the vocabulary featured in the textbook by recourse to the teacher during class and to these tapes privately over the course of the week. Translation exercises are regularly given as homework, which is later corrected and analysed by the whole class.
